Get What’s On updates directly to your inboxSubscribeSee our privacy noticeThank you for subscribing!Operator totally forgets that their prime objective should be to bring Manchester a really brilliant restaurant and gets sidetracked into commissioning some massive Joy Division artwork, a sculpture of Ian Brown’s head or menus made out of pieces of the Hacienda dancefloor.What is it about Manchester that makes restaurants brands from outside the city think it’s the only language we’ll understand or that it will make us want to go to their venues?More worryingly is that the caricatured view of Manchester from outside the city walls?This week, 20 Stories which is beautiful to look at and has a fine chef at the helm in Aiden Byrne decided to commission a painting that can at best be described as bizarre.(Image: Matthew Pover)The ‘Last Supper’ of Manchester put 20 of the most ‘powerful and influential’ modern Mancunians on the same canvas, which will sit in the restaurant, just in case we forget a) where we are or b) to stop listening to the Happy Mondays for more than five minutes, which I believe is a crime punishable by being made to wear skinny jeans for a day.Among these figureheads of modern civic pride are Nick Grimshaw (off the radio) and Michelle Keegan (off the telly).Even more baffling is the inclusion of Ariana Grande, who, aside from being American, conjures up fairly grim memories of the city’s worst event in modern history.The operator, D runs a load of restaurants in London, none of which contain pictures of people from EastEnders, Chas and Dave, Al Murray the pub landlord, pearly kings and queens, Guy Fawkes or Paddington sodding Bear (although Zizzi in Paddington does, incidentally. Which is still inexcusable.)Here’s a bananas idea how about delivering a really great restaurant that’s all about the food, and sack off the cringeworthy cultural nods?(Image: Gary Louth)Yes you, Burger Lobster, with your enormous Joy Division light installation. If the boss of Burger and Lobster (based in London) can name me five Joy Division tracks, I’ll dress up like a lobster and work behind your bar for a month.
